Kuda and Moniepoint are the two biggest digital banks in Nigeria, and both are free. But “free” hides very different trade-offs. I ran both as my primary accounts for two months to find the difference that actually matters for daily transactions.
Kuda is the better daily driver — smoother app, better budgeting tools, and more reliable card transactions. Moniepoint wins on business banking and agent-network ubiquity: if you’re a trader, freelancer, or business owner collecting payments, Moniepoint’s ecosystem is the stronger pick.
Both give you a free account number, free transfers (within limits), a virtual card, and physical card delivery. Both are faster to open than a traditional bank branch visit — under 10 minutes with BVN. Both have had downtime issues at some point, which is normal for Nigerian fintech.
Kuda’s app is the best-designed banking app I’ve used in Nigeria, period. The budgeting feature (spend categories that tell you where your money went) is genuinely useful, and the card controls — freeze/unfreeze, spending limits, instant notifications — work flawlessly. International payments and virtual cards for subscriptions are smoother on Kuda too.
Moniepoint owns the POS/agent market in Nigeria, and that network shows in daily life: cash deposits and withdrawals via agents everywhere, business payments that settle instantly, and a strong app for tracking business income. If you collect payments from customers — market trading, POS services, any cash business — Moniepoint is built for exactly that.
| Feature | Kuda | Moniepoint |
|---|---|---|
| Account opening | Free, ~5 mins | Free, ~5 mins |
| Transfers | 25 free/month, then ₦10–25 | Free within limits |
| Virtual card | ✓ Free | ✓ Free |
| Physical card | ₦1,000 delivery | Free |
| Agent deposits | Limited network | Huge network |
| Business features | Basic | Strong (POS, payments) |
Neither will charge you for existing, and neither is a bad choice. The difference is what you do with the account: daily personal banking on Kuda, money collection on Moniepoint. Match the tool to the job and you can’t go wrong.
